Backflow Testing in Raleigh
Hands-On Ownership for Raleigh Backflow Testing & Repairs
Backflow is the unwanted reversal of water or another substance into a potable water supply. It can arise from pressure differences in plumbing pipes, including backsiphonage or backpressure caused by a water main break, firefighting demand, heavy water use, or pump pressure. Whether you need backflow testing, repair, or replacement, we can inspect the assembly and determine the appropriate next step.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Backflow, & Why Is Prevention Important?
Backflow occurs when contaminated water flows backward into a potable water supply, potentially introducing pollutants, bacteria, or chemicals. A properly selected and functioning backflow prevention device helps stop this reversal at a cross-connection.
How Often Is Backflow Testing Required in Raleigh?
Raleigh Water assigns testing schedules based on the assembly and property use. Commercial irrigation assemblies require annual testing by July 1, while other testable assemblies follow the schedule assigned to the property. Compliance requires a passing operational test by a City of Raleigh Certified Tester and submission of the passing report to Raleigh Water’s reporting vendor, VEPO.
What Happens When a Backflow Assembly Fails?
A failed assembly may need cleaning, repair, or replacement. Raleigh Water requires a successful retest and submission of the passing report within 15 days. The necessary work depends on the device’s condition, connection, and applicable protection requirements.
Can I Install a Backflow Prevention Device Myself?
Installation, repair, or replacement must be completed by an appropriately licensed plumber or contractor. The required license and scope depend on the assembly and property type. Raleigh Water doesn’t provide testing or maintenance, so the property owner or responsible consumer must arrange the work.
